Every pitched roof ends at a peak — the ridge. In this single linear metre, two roof planes meet, and more leaks arise here than anywhere else. Thermal cycles — winter cold and summer heat — expand and contract all materials, gradually breaking the seal.

Ridge Types in Latvia — Each Requires a Different Approach
In Latvia you will encounter four main ridge types, and each requires a different repair technology. A common mistake made by inexperienced roofers is applying the same universal solution to every ridge. It does not work.
Tile Ridge with Mortar Bedding
Clay or concrete tile roofs use semicircular ridge tiles bedded in cement-sand mortar or an elastic polymer system. Traditional mortar, however neat it looks when fresh, is brittle. Latvia's climate — with over 100 freeze-thaw cycles per year — gradually destroys cement. The modern best practice is a polymer-modified mortar base, or a fully flexible mortar system that tolerates movement. Ridge tiles should be replaced if cracked, if mortar has lost adhesion over more than 30% of the length, or if low sections allow tiles to rock.
Metal Ridge Profile
A profiled steel or aluminium ridge profile is common on both metal roofs and tile roofs. The profile flanges are nailed or screwed to the covering, and the seams are sealed. Over time the rubber seals on screws age, sealant seams crack, or the profile itself deforms. Repair means renewing sealant, replacing damaged screws, and — where the profile has deformed — replacing individual sections.
Bitumen Ridge Strip
On flat and low-pitch roofs a bitumen strip is torch-welded across the ridge line. This solution is highly reliable when installed correctly, but it requires the right application technique — insufficient overlap or inadequate substrate preparation leads to eventual strip detachment. A damaged bitumen ridge strip can be repaired by re-welding open seams or applying an additional bitumen detail patch.
PVC and TPO Ridge Cap
On modern membrane roof systems the ridge zone is covered with PVC or TPO membrane hot-air welded to the main membrane. This solution is very durable but requires specialist equipment for repair. Detached membrane seams must be repaired with the correct welding equipment — improvised sealant solutions do not hold long-term.
Ridge Sealant — How Long It Lasts and When to Renew
Ridge sealant or mortar is not permanent. Even the best material ages with time, and Latvia's climate accelerates the process. Understanding material lifespans lets you plan preventive maintenance correctly.
Cement-sand mortar — traditional but problematic. Lifespan 5–10 years in good conditions. Cracks with every freeze cycle. Signs needing renewal: visible cracks, rocking tiles, crumbling appearance.
Polyurethane sealant — flexible, UV-resistant. Lasts 10–15 years. Signs of ageing: surface becomes brittle and cracks, sealant detaches from substrate, colour chalks.
Bitumen-based sealant — suited to metal and bitumen roofs. Lasts 8–12 years. Typical failure: surface cracking in heat, detachment in cold.
Acrylic sealant — inexpensive but shorter-lasting (5–7 years), not recommended for ridge repair — swells in wet weather and detaches from the substrate.
Warning: A damaged ridge is one of the most common entry points for rainwater. If you notice new moisture stains after storms or frost — check the ridge before the next rain.
